Live Music Info, May 2002, (6th year no 19).
In 1969, Tony Joe White introduced the Swampblues into our world. His "Polk Salad Annie"
immediately became a top ten hit in the US. Only a year later, soulsinger Brook Benton
covered Tony's ageless classical "Rainy Night in Georgia". During the seventies, Tony Joe
toured around with many great artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival and James Taylor.
Thirty years later, this brilliant artist hasn't paid in any of his relevance.
He continues writing and singing songs with a high level of blues and soul, he creates
realistic swampcharacters and writes real stories about life and love. In the nineties,
Tony Joe experienced some huge commercial successes when superstar Tina Turner recorded
4 of his numbers. The worldhit "Steamy Windows" is on Tina's "Foreign Affairs" album,
which made platinum several times.
By the way, Tony Joe White was the producer of this title-song. In our part of the
world Tony Joe White enjoyed a status as a living legend. In the meantime he toured in
'91 and '92 with Eric Clapton and Joe Cocker. He recorded two albums for Remark: The Path
of a Decent Groove and Lake Placid Blues. This last album received a nomination for the
best R&B album from Nashville Music Awards.
The songs written by Tony Joe White have been recorded by the greatest artists: from Elvis
to Ray Charles, Hank Williams Jr. to Tim McCraw, John Mayall to Waylon Jennings. He made
contributions to the soundtracks of Millennium and Selena and Hotspot (with Don Johnson).
Recently, he worked with Marc Bryan from Hootie & The Blowfish and with Michael McDonald.
In 2002, Tony Joe White released "The Beginning". An acoustic masterpiece from an artist,
who after all these years still amazes us.
