Top artists as Ray Charles, John Mayall and Tina Turner have one thing in common: they recorded songs written by Tony Joe White. With his warm voice and brilliant lyrics the blues legend easily put the public in his pocket at the R&B festival (at Harelbeke, Belgium - Leo) Saturday night.

He was the artist most looked for. In the VIP-quarters it meant queuing up for an autograph. And it was not just the Flemish who waited patiently for a kind word. " I come from Finland. Saw you in 1992 with Joe Cocker", could be heard in an admiring tone by a man well past his forties from the high North. After him several Irish men were waiting, who, just like the Fin, had also spend 75 Euro to see the artists personally.

Previously White had treated the public to an hour of solid, purebred blues. And for this he needed no accompaniment. For the first four songs he counted on his own vocal and musical skills; after which a percussion player accompanied him.

It became very quiet when White paid a very moving tribute to late Luke Walter JR (Luc Renneboog), the legendary frontman of Blue Blot. "But you keep going on, living up in my dreams" was what the composer of Polk Salad Annie and Rainy Night in Georgia sung.
