De Morgen: A review of Uncovered
Swamp-rock singer and guitar player Tony Joe White has reached the age of 63, an age at which most people start to bother themselves with the question whether they will opt for an early retirement. The man from Louisiana however is not sitting stil. Two years ago he issued a record with contributions from, amongst others, Jessi Colter, Emmylou Harris, Shelby Lynne and Lucinda Williams. On Uncovered he has now invited a group of male friends.

Throbbing names such as Clapton, JJ Cale, late Waylon Jennings, Michael McDonald and Mark Knopfler add nicely to Whites dark brown brooder. The general tone is very laidback and sounds as authentic as White's work from the nineteen-sixty 's. The swamp-rocker reissues a few old songs such as 'Rainy Night in Georgia' and 'Rebellion'. Especially 'Baby Don't Look Down' with Michael McDonald sticks out as White's low hum counters perfectly the Doobie Brother. But 'Not One Bad Thought' with Mark Knopfler and the written and sung with JJ Cale 'Louelda' wil also please those who appreciate. In other words Tony Joe White's swamp-blues sound far from drained.
