Is there life after Lennaert Nijgh?.
Friday, 19 January 2007 - Is there life after Lennaert Nijgh?, is the question that pops up immediately. From today onwards the new Boudewijn de Groot cd "Lage Landen" is for sale. In November 2002 his brilliant youth friend Lennaert, who has written such unique lyrics, passed away. The answer to the above mentioned question was already given on the phenomenal De Groot album from 2003 "Het Eiland in de verte". Lyrics written by himself, Freek de Jonge and Jan Rot were absolutely not out of tune with the pearls from Nijgh. Yet it requires some adjustment when listening to "Lage Landen". The first two songs are namely 'Americana', up-tempo songs, tailored with story telling, slightly ironic, lyrics by De Groot. The song 'De Treinreis' (lyrics by Freek de Jonge) is slightly calmer, 'swampy' like Tony Joe White, soulful like J.J. Cale. |

And then suddenly there is the familiar atmosphere of Lennaert Nijgh, which
arises in 'Het jagen voorbij', the absolute summit of this album.. 'you alone, me lonesome, at the dusk of the day, at the end of the chase…' The high standard of the remaining songs ('Altijd Samen'!, 'Grijze Dame'!) remains unequalled, partly due to the dyed-in-the-wool musicians, with who De Groot has worked for years and the lyrics by Jack Poels and the late Willem Wilmink. The final consists of two incomplete lyrics by Lennaert Nijgh which De Groot has completed: 'Hogeduin' and the tender 'Sonnet IV'. This has now definitively exhausted the 'stock' of Lennaert Nijgh. But this will not withhold Boudewijn de Groot from rejoicing us with his own talents. |
